On the eastern shore of Yorke Peninsula, the 308-metre Stansbury Jetty (built 1905) offers an easy-access snorkel and dive site in shallow, sheltered waters just steps from town. The jetty pylons are encrusted with colourful sponges in shades of orange and pink, while the sand between the jetty and the adjacent breakwater teems with blue swimmer crabs, flatheads, zebra fish, moonlighter fish, and oldwives. Seals occasionally cruise in from the bay, adding to the appeal. With depths of 1–4 metres and a protective breakwater, this spot is ideal for beginners and families exploring a classic South Australian pier habitat.

Moderate risk: Fishing lines and hooks
Fishing hooks and discarded lines from anglers on the jetty can pose entanglement and puncture risks. Snorkellers should stay aware of overhead activity and avoid swimming directly under active fishers.
Low risk: Easterly wind chop
Any breeze from the east creates choppy conditions that spoil visibility at this east-facing jetty. West or north winds are ideal.
Low risk: Current at jetty pylons
Gentle tidal current flows around jetty pylons, strongest during large tidal variations. Best snorkelled at the turn of the tide or on low-variation days.
Low risk: Fishing activity
The jetty is a popular fishing spot — watch for fishing lines, hooks, and sinkers, especially near the pylons and around anglers.
Low risk: Boat traffic near boat ramp
The adjacent boat ramp and channel see vessel traffic. Stay clear of the ramp area and be alert for boats launching and retrieving.
Low risk: Cold water outside summer
Water temperature ranges 17–22°C; outside December–March a wetsuit is essential for comfort.
Low risk: Boat traffic near jetty
The jetty is also a fishing platform and boats may pass nearby. Stay aware and avoid the boat ramp area.
Low risk: Stirred sediment at breakwater
The water near the rock breakwater can get stirred up easily, reducing visibility closer to shore.
Low risk: Cool water outside summer
Water temperatures range 17–22°C; a wetsuit is recommended outside December–March to prevent hypothermia risk.
Low risk: Boat traffic near ramp
Small boats access the nearby ramp and may transit through the swimming area. The boat ramp breakwater also creates a localised hazard zone.
