St Georges Lake, known locally as "Govvy Dam," is a former gold-mining dam turned into a picturesque freshwater swimming and snorkeling spot 2 km east of Creswick. Over 400 m long and framed by pine forest and native bush, the lake features a sandy beach at the deeper western end where the water drops off steeply. The shallow, reed-fringed eastern end offers calmer conditions. A 1.8 km walking loop circles the lake, linking to the Goldfields Track, and the clear, cool water provides excellent visibility for a peaceful freshwater snorkel in Western Victoria's historic goldfields region.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Steep drop-off at beach

The swimming beach drops off sharply into several metres of water within a few strides from shore. Less confident swimmers and children should wear life jackets.

  • Moderate risk: Steep drop-off at swimming beach

The sandy beach slopes sharply into deep water (several metres within a few strides), which can be dangerous for weak swimmers or children.

  • Low risk: Reeds and shallow water at eastern end

The eastern end of the lake is very shallow and choked with reeds, making swimming difficult and potentially concealing submerged debris.

  • Low risk: Cold water temperature

Water can be mild to cold depending on season, which may cause cold shock for unprepared swimmers.

  • Low risk: Dogs on leash only

Dogs must be kept on a leash at all times; uncontrolled dogs near swimming areas can be a distraction or hazard.

  • Low risk: Reeds and submerged vegetation at eastern end

The shallow eastern end of the lake is thick with reeds that can entangle swimmers and obscure underwater visibility.

  • Low risk: Cold water temperatures

Water can be mild to cold, especially outside summer months, posing a risk of cold-water shock or hypothermia.
