Spectacular Reef lies off the Mornington Peninsula's open ocean coast within the region's rich marine park network. Known for its vibrant kelp gardens, sponge-encrusted rock ledges, and surge channels carved into sandstone, this reef system attracts a remarkable diversity of marine life. Visibility is best in autumn and winter when calm conditions prevail. The reef's proximity to shore makes it a rewarding site for snorkellers who want to explore colour-saturated underwater terrain without venturing far offshore. Seasonal aggregations of weedy seadragons and schooling fish add to the spectacle.

Moderate risk: Strong tidal flows
Located beyond Port Phillip Heads where strong tidal currents (ebb and flood) are common, especially around tide changes.
Moderate risk: Open ocean swell
Exposed to Bass Strait swells which can create significant surge and challenging conditions.
Moderate risk: Outgoing tide current
Tidal flows around the reef can strengthen during outgoing tides, particularly near the reef edge.
Moderate risk: Swell and surge
Exposed ocean coastline can experience significant swell and surge, especially during southerly winds, making entry and exit challenging.
Moderate risk: Ocean swell and surf conditions
North Arm Reef is on the ocean-facing side of the Mornington Peninsula where southerly swells can produce strong surge and dumping waves over the reef.
Moderate risk: Rip currents
Ocean beaches in this area can develop rips, especially around reef channels. Snorkel only on calm days with low swell.
Low risk: Boat traffic
The site lies in a shipping channel area with boat traffic near Port Phillip Heads.
Low risk: Cold water temperatures
Victorian waters can drop below 12°C in winter months, requiring thick wetsuits.
Low risk: Variable visibility
Visibility can drop significantly after wind or rain events, especially in Port Phillip Bay.
Low risk: Strong currents
Tidal currents can run strongly around the reef structure, particularly on outgoing tides.
Low risk: Rocky shore entry
Entry and exit are over slippery rocks and boulders, requiring care to avoid injury.
Low risk: Sharp reef and rock ledges
The sandstone reef has sharp edges and overhangs; exposed rock at low tide can cause cuts. Wear booties and take care entering/exiting.
