Southport Beach, the only surf beach on Adelaide's metropolitan coast, sits at the southern end of Port Noarlunga where the Onkaparinga River meets the sea. Its red sandstone cliffs and wide sandy shore form a natural funnel for ocean swell, while just offshore the Port Noarlunga Reef creates a sheltered aquatic reserve teeming with temperate marine life. The iconic 300-metre jetty leads snorkellers straight to a 12-marker underwater trail that winds through reef channels and the famous 'Gap' — a natural break in the reef. Patrolled by South Port Surf Life Saving Club in season, this is a vibrant, family-friendly spot where beachgoers and snorkellers share the water with leafy sea dragons, giant cuttlefish, and over 200 species of marine life.

Moderate risk: Rip currents
Southport Beach is a natural funnel for ocean swell that can produce strong rip currents, especially near the river mouth.
Low risk: Outgoing tide current
The Onkaparinga River estuary outflow can create strong outgoing currents near the southern end of the beach during ebb tides.
Low risk: Boat traffic near jetty
The Port Noarlunga Jetty area sees boat traffic; snorkellers should stay aware of vessels and stick to the designated reef trail area.
Low risk: Exposed reef at low tide
Parts of Port Noarlunga Reef become very shallow at low tide, presenting a risk of cuts from sharp reef rocks for swimmers and snorkellers.
