South Wall Drift is a premier shore-entry snorkel site along the southern breakwater of the Gold Coast Seaway, at the mouth of the Nerang River on The Spit. The rocky breakwall drops to 5–7 m, then slopes over sandy seabed to about 15 m. The main attraction is the sand by-pass pipe — a massive submerged pipeline resting on pylons — that funnels marine life and creates a gentle drift on the incoming tide. Snorkellers float alongside schools of big-eye trevally, bream, and whiting while spotting eagle rays, flathead, and colourful reef fish sheltering around the pipe pylons.

Moderate risk: Incoming Tide Current
The current runs strongly into the seaway on incoming tide. Snorkellers must time entry 30–60 minutes before high tide and avoid outgoing tide, which can sweep snorkellers out to sea.
Low risk: Strong Drift Along Pipe
The current accelerates around the sand pipe pylons, creating turbulence above and below. Inexperienced snorkellers may get buffeted or separated from their group.
Low risk: Treated Sewage Outfall
A sewage treatment outfall pipe also lies along the wall, discharging treated effluent after high tide. Avoid snorkelling during or just after discharge periods.
Low risk: Uneven Rock Entry/Exit
Entry requires clambering over large, uneven boulders on the breakwater. Slippery when wet; care needed for safe exit.
