South Melbourne Beach (also known as Albert Park Beach) is a gently sloping sandy beach along Beaconsfield Parade on the shores of Port Phillip Bay, just 3 km from Melbourne's CBD. The calm, shallow waters inside the pier-protected area make it a popular spot for wading and casual snorkeling. The beach is patrolled by the South Melbourne Life Saving Club in summer, adding safety for swimmers. While not a premier snorkeling destination compared to the reefier sites of the Mornington Peninsula, its convenient urban location and easy shore access make it a solid choice for a quick dip or a beginner snorkel session. The sandy seabed offers limited underwater structure, so marine life is subtle, but Port Phillip Bay's resident fish and rays can sometimes be spotted.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Low risk: Watercraft traffic near boat ramp

Occasional jet skis and small boats launching from nearby ramps may cross swimming/snorkeling zones.

  • Low risk: Rip currents during storms

Strong onshore winds and storms can create dangerous rip currents along Port Phillip Bay beaches.

  • Low risk: Fishing line entanglements

Fishing from the pier and shore can leave discarded lines or hooks in the water, a hazard for snorkelers.

  • Low risk: Ship traffic

Proximity to Station Pier means large cruise and cargo vessels pass nearby; stay within patrolled swimming zones.

  • Low risk: Wind chop

Afternoon northerly or southerly winds can create choppy surface conditions on Port Phillip Bay, reducing visibility and making swimming more tiring.

  • Low risk: Bluebottle jellyfish

Bluebottles (Physalia physalis) occasionally drift into the bay during northerly winds, especially in summer months.
