South Island is the southernmost of the six high continental islands in the Lizard Island group, part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and Lizard Island National Park. This fringing-reef island sits in the northern Great Barrier Reef, surrounded by pristine coral gardens, clear turquoise waters, and abundant marine life. Unlike the busier Lizard Island resort area, South Island offers a more secluded snorkeling experience, with shallow fringing reefs dropping off into deeper coral walls. The reef here is exceptionally healthy and forms part of the ribbon reef system that makes this region world-renowned for underwater beauty.

Moderate risk: Tidal currents
Strong tidal currents can sweep through the channels between the Lizard Island group islands, particularly during spring tides.
Moderate risk: Strong tidal currents
Strong tidal currents flow through the passage, creating a powerful drift that can carry snorkelers away from the reef wall. Requires good fitness and confidence in current.
Moderate risk: Marine stingers
Marine stingers (box jellyfish and Irukandji) are present in tropical Queensland waters during the warmer months (November to May).
Low risk: Marine stingers (jellyfish)
Marine stingers (box jellyfish) are present in northern Queensland waters during the warmer months (November to May).
Low risk: Remote location
The area is remote with limited emergency services; the nearest medical facility is on Lizard Island or back on the mainland.
Low risk: Sharp coral
Coral reefs are sharp and can cause cuts; care needed when entering and exiting water.
Low risk: Deep drop-off adjacent to reef wall
The reef wall drops to significant depths adjacent to the passage. Snorkelers should stay aware of their position relative to the reef edge.
Low risk: Boat traffic
Marine traffic including resort boats and liveaboard vessels operate in the area. Snorkelers must stay visible and clear of vessel paths.
Low risk: Tide-dependent reef access
Snorkeling access from shore is best at high tide; low tide exposes shallow reef flats making entry difficult.
Low risk: Outgoing tide current
Strong tidal currents can occur around the headland and reef channels.
Low risk: Sun exposure
Sun exposure is intense due to tropical latitude and reflection off the water.
Low risk: Stingers (box jellyfish)
Marine stingers (box jellyfish) are present in the warmer months.
Low risk: Moderate tidal currents
Currents can be moderate around the rocky bommie, especially on an outgoing tide.
