The South Island beaches of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands offer some of the most pristine, untouched snorkeling in the Indian Ocean. These remote white-sand beaches fringe a turquoise lagoon protected by an outer reef, where crystal-clear water teems with over 500 species of fish, vibrant hard corals, and friendly sea turtles. Unlike busier spots on West Island, South Island's beaches remain uncrowded and wild, providing a true castaway experience. The calm, shallow lagoon waters are ideal for drifting over coral gardens just metres from shore, with parrotfish, angelfish, butterflyfish, and giant clams visible in the gin-clear visibility.

Moderate risk: Tidal currents in channels
Strong tidal currents can develop in the channels between islands, particularly around the southern atoll. Stick to shallow lagoon areas.
Low risk: Shallow water at low tide
The lagoon beaches are tide-dependent; at low tide the water can become very shallow, making swimming and snorkeling difficult. Best visited at mid-to-high tide.
Low risk: Sharp coral / reef cuts
Sharp coral and rocky reef bottoms are present in some areas. Reef shoes are strongly recommended.
