South Horn is a premier offshore dive and snorkel site perched on the exposed outer edge of the northern Great Barrier Reef, near Lizard Island (Jiigurru). This remote reef pinnacle features dramatic walls dropping into deep ocean waters, with a sloping coral shelf starting at around 12 metres and tumbling into the abyss. The site is renowned for encounters with large pelagic marine life — grey reef sharks, giant trevally, and seasonal minke whales — as well as stunning coral gardens on the upper slopes. Because of its open-ocean exposure, South Horn delivers exhilarating drift snorkels and world-class visibility, but demands confident swimmers and favourable conditions.

Moderate risk: Strong tidal currents
Strong currents sweep across the exposed outer reef face, particularly on the ebb tide. Drift snorkelling is common but requires experience.
Moderate risk: Ocean swell and wind chop
South Horn is exposed to the Coral Sea. Swell and wind chop can create dangerous conditions, especially during the summer cyclone season.
Low risk: Remote location
The site is remote with no immediate emergency services. Evacuation to Lizard Island or Cairns may take hours.
Low risk: Large pelagic sharks
Grey reef sharks and other large pelagics are common. While not typically aggressive, their presence can be intimidating for inexperienced snorkelers.
