The spot

Community-maintained

Community contribution: submitted by Daniel

Built in 1870, Sorrento Pier extends into the calm waters of Port Phillip Bay on the Mornington Peninsula. This historic jetty is a beloved snorkeling spot thanks to its deep-water access alongside the Searoad ferry terminal, which draws nutrient-rich currents and diverse marine life. The pier's wooden pylons are encrusted with colourful sponges and seaweed gardens where squid, octopus, weedy sea dragons, crabs and stingrays hide in plain sight. By night, the underwater action intensifies as curious seals and migrating spider crabs (autumn) make appearances. The juxtaposition of ferry traffic and abundant sea life makes this a uniquely productive shore-entry snorkel.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • High risk: Ferry Traffic

The Queenscliff-Sorrento car ferry operates daily from this pier. Snorkelers must stay clear of the ferry berthing area and vessel path, especially during summer months when services run frequently.

  • Moderate risk: Strong Tidal Currents

The pier sits near deep ferry channels where strong tidal flows can develop, particularly on peak incoming/outgoing tides. Currents can sweep snorkelers away from the pylons.

  • Moderate risk: Boat Traffic

Charter boats and private vessels use the pier for loading. Snorkelers should remain vigilant and use a dive flag marker buoy to signal their presence.
