Lake Somerset, formed by the Somerset Dam on the Stanley River, offers a peaceful freshwater snorkeling escape just over an hour northwest of Brisbane. The designated swimming area known as "The Spit" features calm, cool waters with good visibility, surrounded by rolling hills and eucalypt forests. A popular spot for water sports and family recreation, the dam's sheltered coves and sandy shoreline make for relaxed, easy-entry snorkeling away from ocean currents. Home to large Australian bass, the lake provides a unique freshwater snorkeling experience in South East Queensland.

Boats, jet skis and kayaks share the lake; stay within the designated swimming zone at The Spit.

  • Low risk: Limited visibility in murky conditions

After rainfall or windy conditions, freshwater visibility can reduce significantly.

  • Low risk: Cold water shock

Dam water can be significantly cooler than ocean beaches, especially during winter months (June–August).
