Snapper Grounds is an offshore reef system in the southern Great Sandy Marine Park, accessible by boat from nearby Hervey Bay on the Sunshine Coast. This submerged reef structure is a well-known destination for divers and snorkelers seeking encounters with large snapper, pearl perch, and other pelagic fish species. Part of a network of local dive sites that includes the Iron Maria Wreck and Hardy Reef, Snapper Grounds offers clear coastal waters and productive reef structure that attracts a diversity of marine life. Access is exclusively via charter boat from the Boat Club Marina in Hervey Bay.

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Strong Tidal Currents

Tidal flows can be powerful around the reef ledges and gutters, especially during spring tides.

  • Moderate risk: Marine Stingers

Box jellyfish and other marine stingers may be present during the warmer months (November to May).

  • Moderate risk: Strong ocean currents

Being an offshore reef, Snapper Grounds can experience moderate to strong tidal currents that may challenge less experienced snorkelers.

  • Low risk: Boat Traffic

The area is a popular fishing ground and transit zone, requiring vigilance for vessel traffic.

  • Low risk: Ocean Swell

Exposed offshore position can experience unpredictable ocean swell and wind chop.

  • Low risk: Offshore boat access only

The site is located several kilometres offshore and is only reachable via boat charter. Snorkelers must be comfortable with boat travel and open-water conditions.

  • Low risk: Limited Visibility

Tidal stirring and depth can reduce visibility. Unpredictable conditions may arise with wind or swell events.
