Snake Bay, also known as Milikapiti, sits on the serene northern coast of Melville Island — Australia's second-largest island. This remote Tiwi Islands village offers exceptional snorkelling in the pristine, crystal-clear waters of the Arafura Sea. The coastline here is a mix of white-sand beaches, rocky headlands, and shallow tidal flats that reveal vibrant coral gardens and seagrass meadows. Being on Aboriginal land with restricted access, the waters remain largely untouched, offering a rare wilderness snorkelling experience. The warm tropical waters are home to colourful reef fish, rays, and turtles. Beyond the snorkelling, the Tiwi culture and stunning sunsets make this a truly unique Top End destination.

High risk: Saltwater crocodile presence
Saltwater crocodiles inhabit the coastal waters and estuaries of the Tiwi Islands. Always check local advice before entering the water and never swim alone.
Moderate risk: Outgoing tide current
Strong tidal flows can develop around the headlands and channel entrances, especially during spring tides. Snorkellers should be aware of changing conditions.
Moderate risk: Stinger season (box jellyfish)
Box jellyfish and other stinging marine life are present in Top End waters during the warmer months, particularly October to May.
Low risk: Remote location
The remote location means limited medical facilities. Milikapiti has a health clinic but serious emergencies require evacuation to Darwin.
