Sir Joseph Banks Group Marine Park lies off the coast of Tumby Bay in lower Spencer Gulf, protecting a chain of low-lying limestone-capped islands surrounded by shallow reefs, seagrass meadows, saltmarsh, and uncommon popcorn coral. With over 70 species of fish, the clear, sheltered waters offer outstanding snorkeling around rocky island edges and sandy bays. The park is also a haven for Australian sea lions, dolphins, and diverse seabirds. Best accessed by boat from Tumby Bay, the islands provide a wild, remote snorkeling experience set against the dramatic coastal landscape of the Eyre Peninsula.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • High risk: Remote location

Limited emergency services and long distance from shore (12 nautical miles from Tumby Bay) mean any incident requires significant response time.

  • Moderate risk: Boat traffic in channels

The park is a popular fishing and charter destination; boat traffic in the narrow channels between islands can be hazardous for snorkelers.

  • Moderate risk: Strong tidal currents

Tidal flows through Spencer Gulf and between the islands can create strong, unpredictable currents, especially around reef edges.

  • Low risk: Variable weather and swell

Southern Ocean swells and sudden weather changes can create rough conditions in exposed areas around the islands.
