Shiprock is Sydney's most revered shore-dive and snorkel site, nestled at the junction of Burraneer Bay and Port Hacking on the Cronulla Peninsula. Named for a large shoreline rock that resembles a ship, this Aquatic Reserve protects a steep underwater wall dropping to 18 m, where over 130 fish species gather. The site is always flat-water (river-protected) and accessible via a spectacular set of stairs built in 2012. Strong tidal currents make high-tide timing essential, but the reward is a thriving reef teeming with decorator crabs, sponges, and occasional tropical visitors carried in by the East Australian Current.

High risk: Shipping Channel
The site is in a navigable shipping channel. Boats can pass overhead; a dive flag is mandatory and snorkelers must surface in shallow water near the wall.
Moderate risk: Tidal Current
Very strong tidal currents outside of high tide; swimming against them can be exhausting or impossible. Dive must be timed to high tide at Fort Denison.
Moderate risk: Strong tidal currents
The narrowing of Port Hacking at Shiprock creates accelerated tidal flows, particularly around the turn of high tide. Only calm around the tide change.
Moderate risk: Boat traffic
The channel is active with boats, especially on weekends. Snorkelers should avoid surfacing in the main channel.
Low risk: Oyster-encrusted Rocks
Sharp oysters on rocks just below the surface at the exit point. Gloves are recommended to avoid cuts.
Low risk: Steep Stairs
A long, steep staircase with many steps connects the road to the entry point. Physically demanding with heavy gear.
Low risk: Deep submarine cliff
The drop-off descends to 15 m close to shore — snorkelers should be confident in deeper water and watch their depth.
Low risk: Stair access
A long elevated stairway connects Shiprock Road to the water. The climb back up after a snorkel is strenuous.
