Nestled within the Cabbage Tree Bay Aquatic Reserve on Manly's southern shore, Shelly Beach is a sheltered sandy haven renowned as Sydney's premier beginner-friendly snorkeling destination. The bay's calm, protected waters are guarded by a rocky barrier to the north, creating a shallow nursery-teeming with seagrass meadows, kelp-covered boulders, and sandy patches. Since fishing was banned in 2002, fish here are plentiful and remarkably unafraid — expect close encounters with the striking blue males of the Eastern blue groper, shy Port Jackson sharks, wobbegongs hiding under ledges, and clouds of mado sweeping through the shallows. The seabed gently deepens from 0.5m at the shore to 4-5m in the centre, making it ideal for novices and families. A 10-minute scenic walk along Marine Parade from Manly Beach leads you here.

Low risk: Cold water temperatures (winter)
Outside summer months, water temperature drops significantly; a wetsuit is strongly recommended.
Low risk: Rocky entry areas
The rocky barrier to the north and rocks near Fairy Bower entry have slippery, uneven surfaces; watch footing.
Low risk: Swell after rough weather
While usually calm, conditions can deteriorate with southerly swells; check forecasts before entering.
Low risk: Boat traffic in the reserve
Despite being an aquatic reserve, boats occasionally enter the bay creating potential collision hazards for snorkelers.
Low risk: Cold water outside summer
Water temperature drops significantly from May to September, requiring a wetsuit for comfortable snorkeling.
Low risk: Boat traffic near reserve boundary
Cabbage Tree Bay is a no-fishing aquatic reserve but boats pass along the outer edges; stay within the marked swimming area.
Low risk: Rocky reef at edges
The sheltered cove has boulders and rocky reef along the sides that can be sharp; watch footing on entry and exit.
Low risk: Bluebottle jellyfish
Portuguese man o' war (bluebottles) can drift into the bay, particularly during warmer months (summer).
