Shelly Beach, tucked beneath the Caloundra Headland on the southern Sunshine Coast, is widely regarded as the unofficial home of snorkelling in the region. Its extensive nearshore reef system — one of the largest on the coast — reveals a vibrant underwater world of coral bommies, rock pools at low tide, and abundant fish life. While water clarity can be variable after rain, a calm, clear day transforms this unpatrolled beach into a spectacular snorkelling destination. The adjacent Des Dwyer Walkway connects the headlands, and Shelly Beach Park above offers shaded picnic tables, making it an ideal spot for a full day of coastal exploration.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Unpatrolled Beach

Shelly Beach is not patrolled by lifeguards — no flags or safety supervision. Swim at your own risk.

  • Low risk: Poor Water Clarity After Rain

Visibility can be significantly reduced after rainfall or windy conditions due to runoff and sediment. Best visited after a spell of calm, dry weather.

  • Low risk: Strong Shore Dump / Surf

The beach can experience shore breaks and surging waves, especially on a rising tide or during easterly swells, making entry and exit tricky.

  • Low risk: Rocky Reef Hazards

Extensive rocky reef systems lie just offshore — sharp coral and rock ledges can cause cuts and scrapes. Reef shoes recommended.

  • Low risk: Rocky Shore & Reef Cuts

The nearshore reef system includes sharp rocks and coral bommies. Low tide exposes extensive rock pools that can be slippery, and reef cuts are possible when entering or exiting the water.

  • Low risk: Variable Swell & Currents

Exposed to northerly and easterly swell, with occasional rips forming around the headland. Snorkellers should assess conditions carefully before entering.
