Shear Reef is a natural reef formation off the coast of North East Tasmania, situated in the cool, nutrient-rich waters of Bass Strait. This temperate reef system features rocky substrate with moderate profile, supporting dense kelp forests and encrusting marine growth. The site offers a wild, exposed snorkeling experience typical of Tasmania's rugged northeast coastline, where clear oceanic water meets a thriving benthic ecosystem. Its location — roughly 1 km offshore from the Fossil Bay to Return Point stretch — places it within reach of shore-based snorkelers on calm days, though conditions change rapidly with wind and tide. The reef's isolation means fewer visitors and a pristine underwater landscape shaped by the powerful Southern Ocean swells.

Moderate risk: Strong Ocean Swells
Exposed location subject to unimpeded Southern Ocean and Bass Strait swells, creating powerful surge and breaking waves over the reef.
Moderate risk: Variable Weather & Wind Shifts
Weather in NE Tasmania changes rapidly; north-easterly sea breezes can pick up quickly, making return swims hazardous.
Moderate risk: Offshore Current
Tidal and wind-driven currents may push snorkelers away from the reef into deeper water; strong swimming ability essential.
Low risk: Cold Water Temperatures
Tasmanian waters range from 12–18°C year-round; cold shock and hypothermia risk without adequate wetsuit protection (5mm+ recommended).
Low risk: Limited Marine Park Signage
The reef lies within or near a marine reserve zone where navigation markers and access signage may be sparse, increasing disorientation risk.

Getting in
Shear Reef is accessible from the North East Tasmania coastline near the Fossil Bay area. Access is via local unsealed roads branching off the Bridport–Tomahawk road network. A 4WD vehicle is recommended for beach access. Snorkelers should enter from a suitable beach or rocky shore launch point on a very calm day and swim approximately 1 km offshore to reach the reef. Exact shore entry points should be scouted in advance at low tide.
Limited roadside parking available near beach access points; no designated carpark.
No fees for shore-based snorkeling access.
