Shark Cave — also called the Opera House by local charter boats — lies on the outer limestone reef at Rottnest Island's southwestern shoulder, 18 km off Fremantle. A wide shadowed opening at 18 m drops into a cathedral-like cavern reaching 28 m depth, where wobbegong sharks rest motionless on the rubble floor and ledges, and grey nurse sharks glide through the dim interior. Torch-lit limestone walls, crevices packed with western rock lobsters, and schooling trevally and snapper outside the entrance make this one of Western Australia's most atmospheric subsea encounters. Only accessible by boat in settled swell conditions.

Directions
Shark Cave is a boat-access only site on the southwestern outer reef of Rottnest Island, approximately 18 km off Fremantle. Charter operators depart from Fremantle, Hillarys Boat Harbour, or Mosman Bay. Ferries from Fremantle (45 min) or Hillarys (25 min) run to Rottnest for divers camping or staying on the island, with charter boats meeting at the site. Advanced Open Water certification is the minimum requirement. A primary torch is mandatory; enriched air nitrox is recommended.

Park at Fremantle Passenger Terminal (B Shed, Victoria Quay), Hillarys Boat Harbour car parks, or Mosman Bay public parking — all paid options. Arrive early on weekends.
