Rye Pier's famous Octopus Garden is a 200-metre self-guided snorkelling trail through a spectacular underwater world beneath the pier on the Mornington Peninsula. The pier pylons are encrusted with colourful sponges, sea squirts and marine growth, forming an artificial reef that teems with life. This is renowned as the easiest place in the world to spot pot-bellied seahorses, and the purpose-built octopus hides deliver close encounters with multiple octopus species. Smooth stingrays, spider crabs, and the occasional weedy sea dragon also patrol these shallow, nutrient-rich waters just 90 minutes from Melbourne.

Moderate risk: Boat Traffic
The pier head extends into boating channels. Snorkellers near the far end should be vigilant of vessel traffic and display a dive flag.
Moderate risk: Southern Blue-ringed Octopus
This small but venomous species is present under the pier. Do not touch or disturb octopuses in their hides.
Low risk: Fishing Activity
Fishing lines and hooks from anglers on the pier above can pose entanglement and snagging hazards. Stay directly under the pier and watch for lines.
Low risk: Tidal Current
Moderate currents can develop around the change of tides, especially at the pier head. Snorkel either side of the tide change for safest conditions.
Low risk: Cold Water
Water temperatures range 17–22°C year-round. Extended exposure without a wetsuit can lead to cold shock or hypothermia.
