Screws Creek (also known as Screw Creek) lies within the rugged Bunurong Marine Park along Victoria's stunning Gippsland coastline. This 17 km stretch of windswept beaches, sandstone cliffs, and hidden coves offers excellent opportunities for experienced snorkelers and divers to explore intertidal reefs teeming with sea stars, anemones, and molluscs. The rocky shoreline and rock pools provide a captivating underwater landscape, while the marine park's protected status preserves the vibrant marine ecosystem. Best accessed from nearby Inverloch or Cape Paterson, this is a wild, exposed spot that rewards those prepared for the conditions.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Rough surf and swell

The exposed coastline frequently experiences strong surf and swells that can make entry and exit hazardous, especially for inexperienced swimmers.

  • Moderate risk: Rip currents

Unpredictable rip currents can develop along the sandy stretches between rocky headlands.

  • Low risk: Swell and surge

Bass Strait swells can create strong surge across the rock platforms, especially during onshore winds and high-energy conditions.

  • Low risk: Slippery rock platforms

The sandstone and mudstone reef platforms can be extremely slippery when wet, requiring careful footing when entering and exiting.

  • Low risk: Changing tides

Tidal movements can affect water depth over the reef platforms, with shallow areas becoming impassable or exposing sharp rocks at low tide.

  • Low risk: Sharp sandstone reefs

Sandstone reefs and rock platforms can be extremely sharp, posing a laceration risk when entering or exiting the water.

  • Low risk: Cold water temperatures

Southern Ocean waters remain cold year-round (12-18°C), increasing risk of hypothermia during extended snorkels.
