Sawtell Island is not a true island but a pair of rocky reefs extending 600 m offshore at the southern end of Sawtell Beach, on the Coffs Coast. Protected by the reefs, the adjacent bay offers calm, shallow waters perfect for family snorkeling. Beginners can explore abundant tidal rock pools in safety, while more experienced snorkelers can venture around the rocky outcrops where the marine life intensifies. The reef system sits within the Solitary Islands Marine Park, known for mixing temperate and tropical species. With beachside showers, toilets, and parking nearby, it's an accessible and rewarding spot for all skill levels.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Ocean swell and currents

Southerly swells can create strong sweep around the island. Best snorkeled on calm days with low to mid tide.

  • Moderate risk: Unpatrolled beach

Sawtell Island and Bay are NOT patrolled by lifeguards. Swim at your own risk.

  • Low risk: Sharp rocks

The offshore reef and jump-off rocks near the island are composed of sharp, vertically aligned strata. Care needed when entering and exiting the water.

  • Low risk: Unpatrolled waters

Sawtell Island and Bay are not patrolled by lifeguards. No flags or supervision. Swim at your own risk.

  • Low risk: Boat traffic

The area near the island includes a boat launching ramp at Corambirra Point, and boats navigate the nearby waters.

  • Low risk: Swell and surf conditions around island

The island side can experience southerly swell and strong waves, especially in winter. Best on calm, low-wind days for snorkelling.
