Sandbox is a stunning snorkel site on the edge of a channel within Opal Reef, part of the Outer Great Barrier Reef off Port Douglas. The site features sandy patches that gradually slope into shallows, transitioning from deeper boulder corals to expansive gardens of staghorn coral and vibrant giant clams. The diverse habitat attracts everything from pelagic species on the deep side to large schools of reef fish in the shallows. On calm days, adventurous snorkelers can swim out to deeper bommies where red bass, trevally, and barracuda school in the clear waters.

Moderate risk: Marine stingers
Marine stingers (box jellyfish and Irukandji) are present in tropical Queensland waters, primarily during the warmer months.
Low risk: Tidal currents
Opal Reef sits near the edge of the continental shelf and can experience strong tidal currents, especially around the channel edges at Sandbox.
Low risk: Wind chop
Southeasterly winds can create choppy conditions on the outer reef, making snorkeling more challenging.
Low risk: Remote open-ocean location
The site is on the outer reef in the Coral Sea, accessible only by boat; open ocean conditions apply.
