Sheltered behind a natural beachrock reef on the wild Limestone Coast, Salmon Hole is a 600-metre-long curving beach of crystal-clear, teal-coloured water that stays remarkably calm while ocean swells pound the outer reef. This rare family-friendly swimming sanctuary offers a protected lagoon-like environment perfect for snorkelers of all abilities, with rugged cliffs framing the shoreline and soft sand underfoot. Its tranquil, reef-sheltered waters make it one of South Australia's most picturesque and safest coastal swimming holes.

Moderate risk: Ocean swells outside reef
While the hole itself is calm, powerful Southern Ocean swells crash against the outer reef. Stay inside the protected lagoon area.
Moderate risk: Ocean swells beyond the reef
Large swells break heavily on the outer reef; venturing beyond the protected lagoon can be dangerous.
Low risk: Beachrock reef
The submerged beachrock reef that shelters the hole can be sharp underfoot when entering or exiting the water. Wear reef shoes.
Low risk: Tidal current through gaps
At higher tides, currents can push through gaps in the reef. Be mindful of tidal flow, especially at mid-to-high tide.
Low risk: Beachrock reef at low tide
The protective reef lies close to shore and may be exposed or very shallow at low tide, creating a rocky bottom to navigate near the entry.
Low risk: Rip currents near reef gaps
Periodic rip currents can form through breaks in the beachrock reef, especially during larger swell events.
Low risk: Sharp reef rock at low tide
The protective reef is exposed at low tide; swimmers must avoid walking on sharp reef edges and barnacles.
Low risk: Occasional swell surge over reef
Swell can surge over the reef during large southerly swells, creating unexpected currents inside the lagoon.
Low risk: Cold water temperature
Water temperatures are cool year-round (12–17°C); prolonged immersion without a wetsuit risks cold shock.
