Royal Beach is a compact, west-facing pocket beach on the Mornington Peninsula, stretching just 190 metres between Schnapper Point and the rocky headlands. At high tide the narrow strip of sand and pebbles is inviting, but at low tide it reveals a broad rock-and-reef flat that extends into the bay — excellent for exploring tide pools and spotting small reef dwellers. Its sheltered position inside Port Phillip Bay means calm, protected waters that warm up in summer, making it a convenient shore-entry snorkel spot close to Mornington township.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Low risk: Exposed reef at low tide

At low tide a continuous rock and reef flat is exposed, making entry/exit tricky and requiring care to avoid cuts on sharp edges.

  • Low risk: Variable tidal conditions

Deep water is only reachable beyond the rocks at low tide; snorkeling is best at mid-to-high tide when water depth is sufficient.

  • Low risk: Boat traffic near Schnapper Point

Proximity to Schnapper Point may see occasional boat and jetty-related activity nearby.

  • Low risk: Exposed reef flat at low tide

At low tide the beach shelves into a wide, shallow reef flat with rocks and broken reef. Snorkelers need to wade out past the rocks to find deeper water.

  • Low risk: Variable tide depths

Deep water accessible only beyond the rock shelf — water depth changes dramatically between high and low tide.
