Off the southwest coast of Rottnest Island, Crystal Palace, Shark Cave, and Roe Reef form a trio of world-class limestone reef dive sites. Crystal Palace is a labyrinth of intricate swim-throughs and caves where schooling Buffalo Bream spiral around you in shimmering silver walls. Shark Cave, on the west end inside a marine sanctuary, is a renowned grey nurse shark aggregation site where divers can observe these graceful, protected sharks up close. Roe Reef offers limestone caverns, swim-throughs, and ledges teeming with reef fish, wobbegong sharks, stingrays, and cuttlefish — all accessible via boat tours from Fremantle or Rottnest Island.

Moderate risk: Strong ocean swells & currents
West-end sites like Shark Cave require calm conditions with easterly winds; swells can make entry and exit dangerous.
Moderate risk: Cave/cavern diving hazards
Limestone cave networks with swim-throughs require good buoyancy control and experience to avoid disorientation or silting.
Low risk: Boat traffic
Active shipping and charter boat lanes around Rottnest Island require surface awareness.
Low risk: Cold water thermocline
Southern Indian Ocean water temps can drop significantly below the surface; wetsuit required year-round.

Getting in
All three sites are accessed by boat — typically via dive charter operators departing from Fremantle or Rottnest Island itself. Crystal Palace is off the south-west coast, Shark Cave at the west end, and Roe Reef nearby. No shore entry is available for these specific sites.
Park at the Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour or North Mole if joining a charter. On Rottnest Island, park at the Thomson Bay Settlement (ferry visitors arrive on foot/bike).
Boat dive charters from Fremantle typically range from $150–$250 per person, including gear. Rottnest Island ferry and entry fees apply separately.
