Roach Island is a dramatic volcanic sea stack off the northern coast of Lord Howe Island, renowned for its signature snorkeling attraction — the 'Eye of Roach,' a massive sea cave that cuts clean through the island. On calm days, guided boat tours bring snorkelers into the shelter of the Admiralty Islands, where you can float through this cathedral-like cavern as shafts of light pierce the opening above. The surrounding waters are part of the Lord Howe Island Marine Park, offering pristine coral gardens, clear turquoise water, and encounters with turtles, reef sharks, and colourful fish. This is one of the most iconic snorkel experiences in the South Pacific, combining geological wonder with world-class marine life.

Moderate risk: Sea cave — weather-dependent entry
The 'Eye of Roach' cave can only be safely entered in calm sea conditions. Swells and strong winds make the cave dangerous or impassable. Tours only run when weather permits.
Low risk: Strong ocean currents
Ocean currents around the exposed northern side of Roach Island can be strong, especially when tidal movements interact with the Admiralty Islands channel.
Low risk: Low rock ceiling inside cave
The cave interior has low overhanging rock ceilings in places. Snorkelers must keep their heads down and follow the guide's instructions to avoid bumping into rock formations.
