Woody Island is one of the largest islands in Western Australia's spectacular Recherche Archipelago, a collection of granite domes rising from the Southern Ocean some 15 km off Esperance. Snorkeling here centres on Shearwater Bay, a sheltered cove with crystal-clear temperate waters and excellent visibility. The island features a marked Snorkel Trail — a joint initiative between local conservation groups and Fisheries WA — that guides swimmers from a swimming platform or beach entry along a route showcasing granite drop-offs, underwater caves, and swim-throughs. The southern waters are notably home to the elusive Leafy Sea Dragon, and the trail offers an accessible introduction to Esperance's unique marine life.

Moderate risk: Strong currents and swell
The Recherche Archipelago is exposed to Southern Ocean swell. While Shearwater Bay is sheltered, conditions can change rapidly and currents around the granite outcrops and drop-offs can be strong — snorkel within the designated trail area.
Low risk: Seasonal ferry operations
The ferry to Woody Island only runs from October to May (weather and numbers permitting). Outside these months, access is not available. All tours are subject to weather conditions and may be cancelled at short notice.
Low risk: Southern Ocean cold water
Temperate waters of the Southern Ocean can be cold year-round. A wetsuit is strongly recommended, especially outside the warmest summer months (December–February).
Low risk: Cold water temperatures
Southern Ocean waters are cool year-round; a wetsuit is highly recommended even in summer to prevent hypothermia during extended snorkelling sessions.
Low risk: Remote location
Woody Island is a 40-45 minute boat ride from the mainland. Medical assistance is limited and evacuation is by ferry only. Snorkel with a buddy and stay within designated areas.
Low risk: Slippery granite rocks
Granite shoreline rocks can be extremely slippery when wet. Use the swimming platform or sandy beach entry where possible and avoid climbing on rocks.
