A pristine wilderness of nearly 105 granite islands and over 1,200 rocky outcrops scattered across turquoise waters off Esperance's southern coast. Known locally as the Bay of Isles, the Recherche Archipelago offers spectacular snorkelling amid underwater drop-offs, caves, and swim-throughs carved into ancient granite. The temperate waters boast excellent visibility and are home to the elusive leafy sea dragon. Woody Island is the only island with visitor facilities, featuring a marked snorkel trail in Shearwater Bay that guides swimmers through a vibrant underwater landscape. Colonies of sea lions and fur seals breed on the outer islands, and sea eagles soar overhead in this untouched marine paradise.

Moderate risk: Strong tidal currents between islands
Strong currents can flow between islands and around granite outcrops, especially during tidal changes. Snorkellers should stay within designated areas like Shearwater Bay.
Moderate risk: Southern Ocean swell and wind chop
The Recherche Archipelago is exposed to the Southern Ocean. Swell and wind can pick up rapidly, making conditions challenging for snorkellers. Best conditions are typically in summer (December–March).
Moderate risk: Remote location with limited assistance
The archipelago is remote, with Woody Island being the only island with facilities. Emergency assistance is limited; boat access is required for all locations.
Low risk: Cold water temperatures
Temperate southern waters remain cool year-round. A wetsuit is strongly recommended, even in summer, when water temperatures average 18–20°C. Winter temperatures can drop to around 15°C.
Low risk: Sharp granite rocks and barnacles
Sharp granite rocks and barnacle-covered outcrops are common throughout the archipelago. Entry and exit points can be slippery. Protective footwear is advised.
