One of South Australia's premier snorkel and dive sites, Rapid Bay sits 90 minutes south of Adelaide on the Fleurieu Peninsula. The star attraction is the historic old jetty — its pylons are encrusted with vibrant soft corals, sponges, and sea stars, while massive schools of bullseyes, old wives, and sweep swirl between the pillars. The 220-metre swim from the new jetty out to the old jetty's T-section rewards snorkelers with crystalline turquoise water, the chance to spot leafy sea dragons near the seafloor, and the occasional surprise visit from rays, octopus, or dolphins. Dramatic cliffs and coastal caves frame the beach above.

High risk: Old jetty structural collapse risk
The deteriorated old jetty has unstable timbers and an increased exclusion zone (updated June 2025) due to storm damage. The T-section is currently out of bounds.
Moderate risk: Tidal currents under jetty
Strong tidal currents move under and around the jetty pylons, making snorkelling tricky. Best on neap tides (dodge tides) or at tide change with minimal tidal movement.
Moderate risk: Currents around jetty pylons
Tidal currents can create tricky conditions when swimming between the old jetty pylons. Best snorkelled on a neap tide (dodge tide) or at the change of tide.
Low risk: Ocean swell and wind exposure
This is an exposed spot; best when swell is under 1m and wind under 15 knots. Easterly or southeasterly winds are ideal.
Low risk: Cold water temperature
Water temperature ranges from 17–22°C; a wetsuit is recommended for comfort, even in summer.
Low risk: Old jetty structural deterioration
Timber collapse risk at the old jetty. Exclusion zones have been expanded (especially the T-section) following storm damage. Obey all signage and barriers.
Low risk: Cold water temperatures
Water temperature ranges from 17–22°C year-round. Even in summer a wetsuit is recommended for comfortable extended snorkelling.
Low risk: Ocean swell exposure
Rapid Bay is exposed to ocean swell. Best conditions are when swell is under 1 m and wind is under 15 knots, ideally from an easterly or southeasterly direction.
