Ramsgate Baths is a shark-netted tidal enclosure on the southern shore of Botany Bay, offering calm, clear waters perfect for families and swimmers of all abilities. Originally part of the historic Pemberton's Ramsgate Baths complex from the 1920s, today's floating net enclosure (installed in 1999) sits within a sheltered sandy beach framed by a bayside promenade. With views across Botany Bay to Sydney Airport's runway, the gentle waters and shallow sandy bottom make this an accessible and relaxed snorkel spot in Sydney's southern suburbs. The baths are best visited after dry weather; the water turns murky after heavy rain.

Moderate risk: Water quality after heavy rain
The enclosure's filter system overflows during heavy storms, causing foul-smelling, polluted water. Best avoided for 48 hours after significant rainfall.
Low risk: Stingrays in shallows
Stingrays bury themselves in the sandy bottom near the shore; swimmers should do the 'stingray shuffle' (shuffle feet across the sand) to disturb them and avoid being stepped on.
Low risk: Stingrays in shallows (summer continuation)
Stingrays remain present through early autumn; continue the shuffle step into the new year.
Low risk: Colder water in winter
Water temperature drops significantly from May to September, making extended snorkeling uncomfortable without a wetsuit or swim cap.
Low risk: Rising tide
At high tide the water reaches the promenade wall, so belongings left on the sand may be submerged.
