Primrose Sands is a gorgeous 1.8 km sweeping sandy beach on the sheltered shores of Frederick Henry Bay, overlooking the Isle of Caves and framed by views of Mount Kunanyi. The shallow, protected waters make it a popular spot for beginner snorkelers, with rocky reef patches near the headlands and sandy gutters teeming with temperate Tasmanian marine life. The beach's south-east end provides the easiest access, with toilets and a boat ramp nearby, and resident dolphins occasionally cruise through the bay.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Low risk: Shifting sand & rock pool instability

Sand movement can rapidly fill in rock pools, changing the underwater terrain week to week.

  • Low risk: Swell exposure (SW)

South-westerly swell exposure can produce occasional choppy conditions in Frederick Henry Bay.
