Portsea Ocean Beach — known locally as "Back Beach" — is a wild 2.5 km stretch of white sand on the ocean side of the Mornington Peninsula, within Mornington Peninsula National Park. Exposed to the full force of Bass Strait, this beach features powerful rolling swells, deep rip currents, and offshore reefs that create dramatic surf conditions. Unlike the calm waters of Port Phillip Bay, this is a raw, energetic coastline where snorkelers need strong swimming ability. The beach is backed by low coastal heath and dramatic cliffs, offering a sense of remoteness despite being close to the resort town of Portsea.
