Port Sorell Jetty extends into the calm waters of the Rubicon Estuary on Tasmania's north coast, offering easy shore-based snorkeling with views across to Narawntapu National Park and the Bass Strait islands. This sheltered pontoon-and-jetty structure sits within a Shark Refuge Area where the protected estuary meets tidal sand flats and shallow reefs. The surrounding area features orange lichen-covered granite rocks, soft white-sand beaches, and clear waters that make it a popular spot for swimming and snorkeling. Best explored at mid-to-high tide when the shallow bars are fully covered.

High risk: Rising tide isolation
People have been caught on reefs and high shoals by the rising tide when wading out over the sand flats at low tide.
Moderate risk: Tidal currents across flats
Strong tidal currents flow across the sand flats at high tide and in the channel at all tides. Snorkelers can be swept off the shallow shoals.
Moderate risk: Unpredictable pontoon motion
The pontoon platform has unpredictable motion in heavy seas and moving parts; no railing is fitted.
Low risk: Shallow water at low tide
Water is very shallow at low tide, with exposed sand flats and reefs that can catch waders and snorkelers as the tide rises.
Low risk: Rocks on adjacent beaches
Lichen-covered granite rocks at Hawley and Taroona beaches present a hazard when entering or exiting the water.
