Just north of Port Kembla Beach, the man-made Olympic saltwater pool sits against a dramatic rock shelf, but the real snorkeling action is on the fringing reef immediately outside the pool's seaward side. Snorkelers enter via the protected beach or scramble over the rock platform to reach a shallow, kelp-draped reef teeming with schooling fish, wobbegongs, and rays. The sheltered inshore waters are ideal for beginners, while the outer reef edge offers more advanced drift past gutters and rocky overhangs. Look for cuttlefish, moray eels, octopus, and the occasional visiting seal or penguin in this biodiverse slice of the Wollongong coastline.

Moderate risk: Swell surge
Southerly swells can create strong surge against the reef and rocks, especially around the outer edge of the fringing reef.
Moderate risk: Outgoing tide current
Tidal flow through the gutters between rock shelves can create swift outgoing currents that pull snorkelers away from the sheltered inshore area.
Low risk: Rock platform entry
Slippery and uneven rock platform when entering/exiting the water outside the pool area; sharp barnacles and sea urchins present.
Low risk: Cold water temperature
Water temperatures can be very cold year-round, often 18°C or below even in summer; cold shock risk for unprepared swimmers.
