Point Gilbert (also called Port Gilbert) is a gentle, south-facing beach tucked at the far end of Port Moorowie on the southeast tip of Yorke Peninsula. Shallow water (1-3 m), easy beach entry, and good visibility in calm conditions make it a go-to for beginners. The sandy seabed gives way to rock ledges about 50 m offshore, where dusky morwong, old wives, and zebra fish congregate. The area is also a known Port Jackson shark nursery, though sightings depend on season. Best in summer on light east or northerly winds — avoid when westerly or southerly breezes pick up.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Low risk: Southerly and westerly winds

Onshore winds from the south or west create choppy conditions and reduce visibility; best on light east or northerly breezes.

  • Low risk: Shallow rock ledges

Submerged rocky ledges about 50 m from shore; be mindful of legs and fins near these formations.

  • Low risk: Variable Weather & Swell

Southern Yorke Peninsula is exposed to Southern Ocean swells; conditions can change rapidly with approaching fronts.

  • Low risk: Rocky Shore Access

Entry and exit points may involve slippery limestone platforms; care needed when carrying gear.

  • Low risk: Limited Facilities & Remote Location

No shops or services in Port Moorowie; nearest supplies are 15 km away in Yorketown. Plan self-sufficiently.

  • Low risk: Onshore wind chop

Westerly or southerly winds create choppy conditions and reduce visibility.

  • Low risk: Low marine life diversity

The shallow sandy environment offers fewer species than nearby jetty reefs; may disappoint more experienced snorkelers.
