The spot

Point Turton Jetty, on the sheltered western coast of Yorke Peninsula, offers one of South Australia's most colourful and accessible snorkels. The jetty's pylons are blanketed in vibrant soft corals — pink, yellow, red, blue and white — teeming with crabs, shrimp, worms, and curious juvenile fish. Schools of yellowtail scad dart between the pylons, while eagle rays occasionally glide into the adjacent sandy bay. The jetty's breakwater-protected position means it's almost always snorkelable, making it a reliable year-round spot for families and beginners. Extend your swim beyond the jetty to explore grassy patches home to Port Jackson sharks and stingrays, or try a night dive to spot dumpling squid and slipper lobsters.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Low risk: Fishing lines and hooks

The jetty is popular with fishers. Snorkellers should stay clear of fishing lines and submerged hooks, especially near the pylons.

  • Low risk: Boat traffic near ramp

The jetty sits beside an active boat ramp. Snorkellers should be aware of boat movements when entering and exiting the water.

  • Low risk: Low tide rock exposure

The Yorke Peninsula experiences very low tides. Exploring the rocky areas either side of the jetty requires a high tide entry to avoid scraping against exposed rocks.

  • Low risk: Fishing hooks and lines

Anglers fish from the jetty above — be mindful of stray hooks and fishing line in the water around the pylons.

  • Low risk: Low tide exposure

The Yorke Peninsula experiences very low tides; rocky areas either side of the jetty are only safely snorkelled at high tide to avoid scraping against shallow reef.

  • Low risk: Cold water temperatures

Winter water temps drop to around 18°C, increasing risk of cold shock; a wetsuit is recommended outside of summer (Dec–Feb).
