Nestled at the entrance to Port Phillip Heads, Point Lonsdale offers exceptional snorkelling along intertidal reefs and deep rockpools beneath the iconic lighthouse. The Back Beach Reef features a maze of rocky crevices, shallow platforms, and deeper channels that shelter a surprising diversity of marine life. At low tide, expansive rockpools are exposed, revealing a thriving underwater world perfect for beginner and advanced snorkellers alike. The site sits within the Port Phillip Heads Marine National Park, and its proximity to The Rip — one of Australia's most dynamic tidal passages — means conditions can shift rapidly.

DANGER: Explicit Risks Present
Point Lonsdale has hazards marked as danger. Entering the water here means you may face serious risks to your personal safety.
- Strong tidal currents danger
The Grotto sits on the Lonsdale Wall where powerful tides flow between the bay and Bass Strait. Snorkel only on slack tide.
- Strong tidal currents (The Rip) danger
Port Phillip Heads experience extreme tidal currents up to 9 knots, especially around the channel between Point Lonsdale and Point Nepean. Snorkel only on slack tide.
- Strong tidal currents at The Rip danger
The outer limits of the park at Point Lonsdale can be subject to strong currents when water is moving in and out of The Heads at Port Phillip. These currents can be dangerous and unpredictable.

Moderate risk: Boat traffic
The area near the Point Lonsdale channel sees vessel traffic. Stay aware and avoid the main shipping channel.
Moderate risk: Boat traffic / shipping channel
The site lies adjacent to the main shipping channel into Port Phillip Bay. Boats and large vessels frequent the area year-round.
Moderate risk: Swell and surge
Exposed to Bass Strait swell, creating surge on the reef and rock shelves that can dislodge or exhaust snorkellers.
Moderate risk: Deep water near channel
Deep water zones adjacent to the reef can catch snorkellers off guard, with potential for strong undertow.
Low risk: Cold water temperatures
Southern Ocean influence keeps water temperatures cool year-round, typically 12–18°C. A wetsuit (5mm+) is essential.
Low risk: Variable visibility
Swell and tidal flow can stir up sediment, reducing visibility significantly. Check conditions before entering.
Low risk: Exposed reef platforms
Sharp reef edges and barnacle-covered rocks on entry/exit points can cause cuts and scrapes. Wear booties.
Low risk: Cold water temperature
Water temperatures range from 10-19°C depending on season. Cold shock and hypothermia risk without appropriate wetsuit (5-7mm recommended).
Low risk: Sharp reef and marine life
Rocky reef with barnacles, mussels and sharp limestone edges that can cause cuts and scrapes if touched.
