Point Gibbon, on the eastern coast of the Eyre Peninsula about 23 km south-west of Cowell, is a wild and scenic headland that drops into sheltered inshore waters perfect for snorkeling. The protected bay inside the point offers shallow, sandy-bottomed flats with patches of seagrass and rocky reef structure, where clear (often calm) conditions provide good visibility. This is a low-key, off-the-beaten-track spot — you'll share the water with local fisherfolk and campers rather than crowds, making it a peaceful place to explore South Australia's southern marine environment.

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Low risk: Incoming / Outgoing Tide Current

Tidal flows moving across the point can create moderate currents in the deeper channel areas, especially near the headland during spring tides.

  • Low risk: Wind Chop

Southerly and south-westerly winds can whip up short-period chop across the bay, reducing visibility and making conditions uncomfortable for weaker swimmers.

  • Low risk: Boating Traffic

The campground's shoreline is popular with small fishing boats and kayakers; keep watch near the launching areas.
