Point Break is an iconic outer Great Barrier Reef snorkel and dive site on Flynn Reef, roughly 60 km east of Cairns. Named for the consistent currents that sweep across its coral bommies and gardens, this site offers an intermediate-level experience with depths from 5 to 20 metres. Snorkellers drift over dense staghorn thickets, giant clam gardens, and spur-and-groove formations while pelagic fish — including trevally, barracuda, and tuna — patrol the channel edges. The site is a regular mooring for Cairns day-trip operators such as Passions of Paradise and Silverswift, who use it as one of two daily reef stops. Its exposed outer-reef position means excellent visibility (often 15–25 m) but also potential for moderate currents, making it best suited to confident snorkellers.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Exposed outer reef conditions

The site has no natural wind shelter, so wind and swell can build quickly, creating choppy surface conditions.

  • Moderate risk: Marine stingers

Marine stingers (box jellyfish and Irukandji) are present in tropical Queensland waters, especially during the warmer months from October to May.

  • Low risk: Moderate currents

Consistent tidal currents sweep across the reef, which can carry snorkellers away from the mooring if they are not attentive.

  • Low risk: Pelagic fish activity

Large pelagic species such as trevally, barracuda, and occasionally reef sharks are attracted to the current lines.

  • Low risk: Tidal currents

Strong tidal currents can develop in the channels between reef bommies, particularly during spring tides. Snorkelers should stay close to the tour group and follow guide instructions.

  • Low risk: Ocean swell

The reef is exposed to open ocean swells and wind chop, which can create challenging conditions for weaker swimmers.
