Platypus Bay is a calm, freshwater snorkeling spot on the western shore of Lake Tinaroo, nestled within the lush Danbulla National Park in Tropical North Queensland. Surrounded by towering hoop pines and open eucalypt forest, the bay offers clear, still waters perfect for spotting freshwater turtles, catfish, and the lake's famed saratoga and rainbow fish. The lake is a volcanic crater lake created by the Tinaroo Dam, and its sheltered bays provide excellent visibility for relaxed freshwater snorkeling away from the ocean crowds.

Low risk: Submerged debris / snags
Lake Tinaroo is a freshwater impoundment; submerged trees, logs, and branches can be present near the shore, especially after rain or changing water levels.
Low risk: Freshwater stingers & algae blooms
Warm months (October to March) bring increased risk of freshwater stingers (jellyfish) and blue-green algae blooms in tropical lakes.
Low risk: Changing water levels (dam operations)
Water levels can fluctuate rapidly due to dam operations, exposing or submerging obstacles.
