Tucked along the Great Ocean Road between Apollo Bay and Skenes Creek, Petticoat Creek is a wild and rugged beach dominated by a sweeping intertidal rock platform — a magnet for divers and adventurous snorkelers. This remote stretch of coastline offers rocky reef terrain with sea caves, ledges, and boulder gardens teeming with marine life. The beach itself has a narrow sandy strip backed by low dunes, but the real draw is underwater: sponge gardens, kelp forests, and the clear Southern Ocean waters that roll in from Bass Strait. Access is via a small carpark near Petticoat Cottage, followed by a short walk through coastal scrub. This is a spot for experienced water-goers who are comfortable with exposed ocean conditions, sweeping swells, and ever-changing tides.

High risk: Sweeping swells and strong surf
Surf Life Saving Australia classifies this section of coast as 'very hazardous' for swimming. Powerful Southern Ocean swells can sweep across the rock platform without warning.
Moderate risk: Rock platform at low tide
The extensive intertidal rock platform is slippery and can only be used safely for fishing at low tide. Snorkelers must time entry carefully to avoid being washed onto sharp rock.
Moderate risk: Outgoing tide current
Tidal flows around the headlands can create strong outward currents that pull snorkelers away from shore and toward open water.
Moderate risk: Isolated location, no lifeguards
Petticoat Creek is an unpatrolled beach with no lifeguard services. Emergency response times are long due to the remote location along the Great Ocean Road.
Low risk: Limited visibility in rough weather
Visibility can drop dramatically after storms or strong onshore winds, making navigation around the rocky reef treacherous.
