Perpendicular Wall is a breathtaking vertical drop-off on Christmas Island's north coast, where the reef plunges almost vertically into deep blue water. The wall is draped in vibrant corals — massive gorgonian sea fans, branching red fan corals, and colourful soft corals leaning outward to catch the tropical sunlight. Fusiliers school up and down the wall in shimmering curtains, while angelfish, butterflyfish, and featherstars cling to the coral-covered face. The dive starts beneath a shallow cave overhang decorated with sea fans, before the seafloor drops away dramatically. Dolphins are frequently spotted before you even enter the water, making this one of the most spectacular reef wall experiences in the Indian Ocean.

Moderate risk: Ocean currents
Strong currents can sweep along the north coast wall, requiring good finning technique and awareness.
Moderate risk: Deep drop-off / depth hazard
The wall drops to significant depths (>30m) — snorkelers should stay close to the surface and avoid free-diving beyond their limits.
Low risk: Swell / rough sea conditions
Swell from the Indian Ocean can create challenging conditions on the exposed north coast, especially during the wet season.
