Pebbles is a rugged coastal snorkeling and surf spot midway between Port MacDonnell and Cape Douglas along South Australia's wild Limestone Coast. The shoreline is characterised by a mix of rounded limestone boulders and cobbles — the "pebbles" that give it its name — interspersed with shallow reef flats and deeper gutters. Exposed to the Southern Ocean swell, the clear waters here offer a raw, untamed snorkeling experience with underwater rock formations, kelp gardens, and the chance to spot reef fish and crayfish sheltering among the crevices. The site is best explored on calm days when the swell subsides, revealing surprisingly clear water over the rocky bottom.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • High risk: Southern Ocean Swell

Exposed site receiving powerful Southern Ocean swell. Large waves can break directly over the reef, creating dangerous conditions even for strong swimmers.

  • Moderate risk: Strong Riptides and Sweeps

Unpredictable rip currents and longshore currents form around the rocky headlands and reef gutters, capable of sweeping swimmers offshore.

  • Moderate risk: Sharp Limestone Reef

The limestone boulders and reef shelf are razor-sharp and barnacle-encrusted. A slip or fall can cause serious cuts.

  • Low risk: Cold Water Temperature

Water temperatures range from 12-16°C year-round. Cold water shock and hypothermia are risks without a full wetsuit.
