Duke of Orleans Bay — affectionately known as 'The Duke' — is a stunning hammerhead-shaped peninsula 85km east of Esperance, where the Southern Ocean meets a rugged granite coastline. Its unique geography means you can almost always find a sheltered, calm bay regardless of wind direction. The snorkeling here is best in the protected coves and bays tucked between granite headlands, where clear turquoise water reveals rocky reefs, seagrass beds, and boulders teeming with temperate fish life. This is a remote, uncrowded wilderness — you might share the water with dolphins cruising the bay rather than other snorkellers. Access to the best snorkelling coves is predominantly by 4WD along sandy tracks.

Moderate risk: Strong rips and currents
Rips can form around the granite headlands and between bays, especially on the outgoing tide. Exercise caution when swimming near rocky points.
