Old Aquarium (also known as Breakwater Rock) is a classic shore-entry snorkel site on Warrnambool's Shipwreck Coast, just east of the protected Merri Marine Sanctuary. The site takes its name from the iconic domes of the former Warrnambool Aquarium, which operated from 1971 to 1998. Snorkellers explore a rugged reef terrace with crevices, overhangs, swim-throughs, and dense kelp forests. Depth ranges from 3 to 6 metres inside Middle Reef, reaching 14 metres further out. The breakwater lights provide easy orientation even on night snorkels. Conditions demand respect — this is the Southern Ocean, and surge and swell can build quickly. Best tackled at low tide with light northerly winds.

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • High risk: White water conditions

If white water is visible from shore, conditions are unsafe — do not enter.

  • Moderate risk: Swell and Surge

The site is exposed to Southern Ocean swells. Large wave surge can occur around the breakwater and over the reef, especially during westerly winds.

  • Moderate risk: Southern Ocean swell and surge

The site faces south into the Southern Ocean and is prone to strong surge and large swells, especially on high swell days.

  • Moderate risk: Swell surge on breakwater

Southern Ocean swells can wrap around the breakwater, creating sudden surge and strong wash near the concrete domes and submerged ruins.

  • Low risk: Strong Currents

Tidal currents can run strongly along the breakwater, particularly on outgoing tides. Snorkellers should be aware of changing conditions.

  • Low risk: Uneven Rocky Substrate

Entry and exit is over rocks and boulders. Slippery, uneven surfaces with sharp edges require sturdy foot protection.

  • Low risk: Cold Water Temperatures

Water temperatures in this region range from 11–17°C year-round, requiring a thick wetsuit for comfortable snorkelling.

  • Low risk: Rugged rock entry and exit

Entry is over rocks onto a reef platform. Slippery and sharp terrain requires care, especially when exiting in surf.

  • Low risk: Outgoing tide current

Tidal movement around the breakwater and Middle Reef can create currents; best dived at low tide.

  • Low risk: Sharp submerged debris

Remnants of the aquarium structure — exposed rebar, broken concrete, and sandstone blocks — can cause cuts and scrapes.

  • Low risk: Changing tide currents

Tidal flows through the breakwater and around the reef can create unpredictable currents, especially on an outgoing tide.

  • Low risk: Sharp rocks and reef platform

Entry and exit is over rocks onto a reef platform — slippery and sharp when exiting.
