The Octopus' Garden is a celebrated 200-metre underwater marine trail snaking beneath Rye Pier on the Mornington Peninsula. This man-made artificial reef features over a dozen interpretive signs attached to the pier pylons, guiding snorkellers and divers through a colourful wonderland of sponge-covered columns, swaying kelp, and Pier pylons turned living reef. True to its name, the site draws several species of octopus, along with dumpling squid, garfish, weedy seadragons, and schools of curious fish. The shallow, sheltered waters make it Victoria's premier snorkel trail — a magical, accessible underwater gallery for all ages.

Low risk: Pier boat traffic
Boats and vessels may be moored or moving near the pier. Snorkellers should stay close to the pylons and be aware of vessel activity above.
Low risk: Cold water temperatures
Water temperatures in Port Phillip Bay can drop to 10–12°C in winter, requiring a thick wetsuit (5–7mm) for comfort and safety.
Low risk: Low visibility after storms
Heavy rain or wind can stir up sediment, reducing underwater visibility significantly, especially in shallower sections.
