The Octopus' Garden is a 200-metre self-guided underwater marine trail that runs beneath Rye Pier on Melbourne's Mornington Peninsula. Follow interpretive signs attached to the pylons through a vibrant artificial reef of colourful sponges, seagrass meadows, and sandy patches. This sheltered, shallow site (max 6m depth) is famous for its resident octopus, pot-bellied seahorses, huge smooth rays, and the occasional stargazer fish. With warm waters (17–22°C) and easy entry from either the beach or a mid-pier platform, it's one of Victoria's most accessible and rewarding snorkel experiences.

Low risk: Boat traffic near pier
Rye Pier has an active boat ramp and vessel traffic passes near the pier structure. Stay close to the pylons and be aware of boats entering and leaving.
Low risk: Tidal currents at tide change
Mild currents can develop around the change of tide, especially near the deeper end of the pier. Snorkel either side of the tide change to avoid stronger flow.
Low risk: Crowds and holiday congestion
Weekends and summer holiday periods can be very busy with swimmers, snorkellers, and anglers. The pier is long so space is manageable, but expect company.
Low risk: Cold water temperatures
Water temperature ranges 17–22°C. In winter and spring the lower end of this range can cause rapid fatigue. A wetsuit (3mm+) is strongly recommended.
