Nudey Beach, on the southeastern side of Fitzroy Island, is a stunning stretch of white coral sand (not sand — crushed coral fragments) backed by lush rainforest and lapped by calm turquoise water. Consistently voted one of Australia's best beaches, it offers rewarding snorkelling directly off the shore where the fringing reef comes close to the beach. The 15-minute rainforest walk from the resort area keeps the beach quiet and pristine. The name refers to the deliberate lack of facilities — no café, toilets, or shade — preserving its wild, natural charm. The reef structure here is complex and rewarding, with excellent visibility on calm days, best enjoyed early morning before the day-trippers arrive.

Moderate risk: Marine stingers (Nov-May)
Stinging jellyfish (box jellyfish and Irukandji) are present in tropical Queensland waters from November to May. Wear a stinger suit.
Low risk: Marine stingers (box jellyfish, Irukandji)
Box jellyfish and other stingers are present in the waters around Fitzroy Island during the warmer months. Wear protective stinger suits.
Low risk: Sharp coral and rocky reef substrate
The fringing reef can have sharp coral fragments underfoot. Reef shoes recommended.
Low risk: Outgoing tide currents
Strong tidal currents can develop around the reef edge, especially during outgoing tides. Check conditions before entering the water.
Low risk: Remote beach with no facilities
No lifeguard, shade, or facilities at the beach. Snorkellers must be self-sufficient and carry water, sun protection, and first aid.
Low risk: Boat traffic
Boat traffic near the main jetty and ferry channel. Nudey Beach itself is less affected, but caution needed when swimming near the Welcome Bay entrance.
Low risk: Uneven walking track
The walking track to Nudey Beach is 1.2 km with moderate incline, uneven surfaces, and steps. Not wheelchair accessible.
Low risk: Sun exposure
Like all Great Barrier Reef locations, sun exposure is extreme. Use reef-safe sunscreen, hats, and UV-protective clothing.
