North Keeling Island — the uninhabited northern atoll of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands — is a pristine marine sanctuary ringed by dazzling turquoise waters and pristine coral reefs. Protected as Pulu Keeling National Park, this remote island offers some of the most untouched snorkeling in the Indian Ocean. The fringing reef drops into crystalline lagoons where you can swim amid vibrant coral gardens, graceful sea turtles, and dazzling schools of tropical fish. Access is strictly by boat or guided tour, ensuring the reef remains in near-pristine condition. Strong currents can sweep around the atoll's channels, making this a spot best explored with an experienced local guide who knows the tide windows.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Strong tidal currents

Strong tidal currents can sweep through the atoll's channels, particularly around the reef passages. These currents can quickly carry swimmers away from the shore.

  • Moderate risk: Remote isolated location

North Keeling Island is remote and isolated — medical facilities are on West Island (25 km south). Any injury requires evacuation by boat.

  • Low risk: Sharp coral and reef rock

Sharp coral and reef rock present along the fringing reef. Snorkelers should wear reef shoes or fins to avoid cuts.

  • Low risk: Marine stingers

Marine stingers including box jellyfish may be present in warmer months. Protective swimwear recommended.
